Baghdad, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- Nine rockets were fired at the Green Zone and its vicinity in Baghdad, wounding several security forces and civilians, the media office of the Iraqi Joint Operations Command said in a statement Friday.
It comes as Iraq's National Assembly prepares to meet to vote for a new president.
Baghdad's Green Zone is home to key Iraqi government offices, including the National Assembly building, and several foreign embassies.
Last October, Iraq held elections for a new national assembly. On 9 January this year, the new National Assembly held its first session. Iraq's constitution says parliament should elect a new president within 30 days of its first session. The new president then appoints the person chosen by the largest parliamentary bloc as the new prime minister and nominate a cabinet within 30 days. Since February, however, the election of a new president and the formation of a cabinet have been delayed due to the lack of a quorum of lawmakers.
